Cold Toes, Warm Hearts

On a day that only comes around once in four years, and the weather was coldΒ and gloomy, students were seen sporting flip-flops.

It wasn’t just because spring break was only a few days away and people were itching for warmer weather. This was Swanson IRHG’sΒ event “Cold Toes, Warm Hearts,” which aims to raise money and awareness of especially coldΒ winters for the inadequately clothed Omaha homeless community.

Swanson IRHG President and Arts & Sciences freshman David Martin helped planΒ and run the event.

β€œSwanson Hall wanted to host this event in order to raise money and awareness forΒ Siena/Francis House,” Martin said.

They advertised in several different ways including the Student News, posters andΒ post cards. There was a $5 fee for the event, for which you got a button and hospitality such as Chipotle, other snacks throughout the day andΒ Father Bisbee’s famous apple cider.

With roughly 200 participants, the event was deemed a success.

β€œThis was an awesome eventΒ that got a pretty phenomenal turnout for a first year program,” Martin said. “Through the generosity of Sodexo, Con-Agra, Fr. Bisbee and Chipotle we were able to provide delicious hospitality to everyone that participatedΒ in this event.”

All of the proceeds, which was $954 dollars total, will be donated to the Siena/Francis House to provide warm winterΒ clothes for homeless residents.
