As the season begins, the Creightonβs women tennis team is starting out on a positive note even after the loss of their first game. Head coach Tom Lilly exhibits a great deal of energy and has high hopes of doing well during the upcoming battles of their up and coming season.
This year the womenβs tennis team is focusing on improving their skills in doubles matches. Creighton is traditionally known for doing well in doubles and the team has been working even harder, Lilly said, as in each game there are seven sets where it is split into having three double matches and six single matches. Doubles are matches that have two players from each team complete against each other in each game wherein single matches it only consists of one on one player.
βPlaying doubles in college tennis is big, if you win the double then you only have to split the rest of the same goals to win the team match,β Lilly said.
Since this is viewed as team oriented, this type of match is much more common in colleges than in tennis matches that are played in professional tennis on national television. As a team, one of their goals is focusing more toward improving on their doubles.
Senior Anna Kirshenbaum is confident that her team will do well this year as team cooperation and goal focusing, βwill help us build our team.β
Analese Snyder, a junior on the team, feels this year that the conference will be a bit more challenging as there are many high ranking competitors, but βif we work hard every day at practice, we will do well.β
As a team, they are going to stay positive during their first three matches in the beginning season in the hopes of finishing up the in the top half of the conference at the end of the year. The teamβs next match will take place against Iowa University on Feb. 8.
This year the Creightonβs women team has a very strong group of individuals, and we look forward to seeing how their year progresses.
