Creighton celebrates Black history month

The Creighton University African-American Student Association will be hosting two events on campus to celebrate Black History Month.

Black History Month, which happens during the entire month of February, serves as a time to reflect upon and celebrate African-American culture. Creighton is planning on observing this month alongΒ with the rest of the country by hosting two events through the Creighton University African-American Student Association (CUASA).

The first event will be a viewing of the documentary β€œWho’s Black in America,” a film by CNN’s Soledad O’Brien who takes a challenging look at the issue of color. There will be a round-table discussion following the screening on Wednesday at 6 p.m., according to Antwonette Hobbs, a Nursing senior and the president of CAUSA. The location of this event is yet to be announced.

The next event will be a “mini-step show showcase” near the fireplace in the Skutt Student Center on February 22nd, at 7 p.m. The showcase will feature many members of multi-cultural Greek organizations and Hobbs encourages Creighton students to attend.

“[The step show showcase] is going to be done in order to display our African American Heritage and History through the rhythmic movement of hands and feet accompanied by chanting and singing,” Hobbs said.

The aim of these two events is toΒ display a modern look at black culture and also examine how the issues of race and diversity apply to Creighton students. This will bring together the purpose of Black History Month and an application to the lives of Creighton students.

The CUASA is under the umbrella of the Office of Multi-Cultural Affairs whose mission is to, β€œadvance the educational, cultural and social understanding of our diverse human family,” according to the office’s website.

Arts & Sciences freshman Christine GonderingerΒ says that she is eager to attend the events put on by CUASA.

β€œI think that the celebration of diversity is really important,” Gonderinger said. β€œAn individual should celebrate their own culture and also learn about the cultures of others as well. I really appreciate that Creighton is trying to highlight the culture of students on campus”
