Creighton to host the sixth annual Project Homeless Connect Omaha this March

Creighton University’s Kiewit Fitness Center will host the sixth annual Project Homeless Connect Omaha this March.

PHCO connects homeless individuals in Omaha to services including: housing, health care, legal resources, employment counseling, haircuts, Social Security, dental care and more.

“I was one of the first people at the event, I was one of the last to leave, and I accomplished more in one day than I had the last 2 years,” said one of the homeless individuals as quoted on the PHCO website.

Government agencies, non-profit agencies, local businesses, volunteer groups, medical providers, legal experts and other service providers come together to offer assistance to homeless individuals, families, seniors, veterans and youth.

Although this event is centered on the less fortunate, Omaha homeless individuals aren’t the only ones who benefit from this event.

β€œThis is a great opportunity when the area homeless can obtain and connect with most of the local service providers and work on ending their homelessness. It’s a great event and I’m proud to be part of it,” said Sarah Rounds Hughes, who will be volunteering at PHCO for her fifth year.

According to the Creighton Calendar, last year more than 500 guests attended the event; which had over 800 volunteers.

β€œThis will be my first year volunteering at PHCO. I’ve always wanted to do something to help Omaha’s homeless population, but I never knew how to go about it. When I heard about (PHCO) from one of my Creighton friends I knew I wanted to be a part of this event,” said Iowa Western student, Torey Miles.Β

Volunteers are needed for set-up, clean-up, greeting, directing, registering, and serving food.

This year, Creighton has approved staff and faculty to use excused paid time to volunteer at PHCO, according to the CCSJ website.

The event will be held on March 28 from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m

Volunteer opportunities and registration are detailed on the CCSJ website at http://blogs.creighton.edu/ccsj/project-homeless-connect-omaha/volunteer-registration/.
